Welcome to the Pro Poodle Page!
The Bluebonnet Poodle Club of Houston wants to present to you to the benefits of a purebred poodle over a doodle of any kind. Many people looking for a hypoallergenic dog think a doodle is the answer. Why? Breeders of these mixes claim they don’t shed and are hypoallergenic when the reality is that the most of the breeds that are mixed with poodles DO shed and can cause allergies. Mixing them with a poodle won’t negate this. In truth, no breed is 100% hypoallergenic but poodles are one of the least allergenic. People can be allergic to the dander or the saliva of any breed. There is no good reason to mix a wonderful purebred poodle with any breed. Everything you want in a doodle is right there in the poodle, pure and adulterated! All the dogs pictured on this page are real poodles!
Doodle puppies are adorable, poodle puppies are adorable, any puppy is adorable. The adult dog is what you want to be focused on. What will you have when the adorable puppy fluff is all grown up? Will you have the 20# dog you were promised, the 40# dog you were promised? Will you have a 75# dog? There are 3 poodle sizes recognized by the AKC and The Poodle Club of America. With a purebred poodle you will have size much closer to the prediction based on years of the same size dogs being bred together. There may be some variation within those sizes but the breeder can point that out to puppy buyers and place them accordingly. You won’t purchase a miniature poodle that grows to 50#!
With a purebred poodle you will be able to predict what the coat will turn out like, based on the parents and other dogs in the line. The AKC breed standard is a curly, naturally harsh texture, dense throughout, however, you can find some variations of this.
Doodle breeders will tell you the grooming is easier, can be started later and done less often. Not true! Any breed requiring grooming needs to be started as early as possible, preferable when still with the breeder. Establish with a groomer by the time the puppy is 8-12 weeks.
Poodles can be groomed so many different ways and will be indistinguishable from a doodle if you desire the fluffy or shaggy grooming look. Not all poodles have to be in a show trim or with a clean face and feet! The advantage is a predictable and manageable coat and predictable temperament.
Poodles generally do not smell like other breeds can. Take a peek at all the poodle pictures here to see the possibilities. Every dog here is a purebred poodle.
Each dog breed has a list of recommended genetic and orthopedic screenings to assure you of the best possible outcome and longest life for your poodle or any other pure breed. Think about it, mixing two different breeds means unpredictable genetic outcomes and no guarantees with orthopedics. For example, mixing an English sheepdog with a poodle is mixing different bone, joint and organ sizes, not to mention different genetic issues and diseases. You may not experience the genetic soup until the puppy is older and you have fallen in love and are relegated to a lifetime of sick dog and thousands in vet bills and heartache and regret. Veterinarians are dealing with doodle health and temperament problems at an alarming rate. There is absolutely no benefit to mixing poodles with another breed. It will not create a hypoallergenic dog. It will introduce more allergy causing aspects, not less. A purebred poodle will be less allergic all on it’s own. No health, temperament, size, coat type or even life expectancy is predictable with a mixed breed.
Doodle breeding is a business, a very profitable business. Breeders generally will not health test the breeding parents as it is very expensive and will cut profits. If they do any testing they can’t predict how each breed’s genes will interact with the other’s.
If your heart is set on a doodle, please adopt from shelters and rescue organizations. At least you won’t be paying thousands for the same thing. The public’s FOMO, fear of missing out, on the latest craze, fad, must have, drives much of the “production”. Excerpt from a recently seen doodle website: “once they begin producing”, meaning the females. And, they generally charge more than pure bred dogs. Remember, a doodle is a mutt, a cute mixed breed. Keep that in mind when shopping for the pet you will potentially have for the next 12-20 years, provided you do the best for your dogs regarding health care.
A purebred poodle from a reputable, ethical breeder can be a much better investment, especially on the back end with fewer vet visits, long term health issues or temperament issues. Even grooming costs can be less, provided you properly maintain the coat at home between groomer visits. Avoid puppy mills, backyard breeders and pet shops selling any breed. None of the parents or puppies from these places are cared for properly. These puppies usually do not even meet the AKC breed standard for size, color and temperament, much less health standards.
Purebred poodles are just as fun, goofy, and very smart. They excel at sports such as obedience, agility, rally, barn hunt, nose work, dock diving, trick dog, etc. Your poodle can be just as hairy, fluffy and adorable as you want. You can dye, trim in fanciful ways, braid hair, just have a big floof or scraggly look. The sky is the limit. The hair continues to grow so you can cut it and start over. I personally have had someone stop in front of my house when I had my pure bred miniature poodle puppies in the front yard and ask me if they were doodles!
These are all the same poodle.
